The bitcoin drop after CPI began at 12:30 UTC on 14 October 2026, when the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported September inflation of 3.7% year over year. BTC fell about 1.4% in the first hour and 2.5% in four hours, then slid below $81,000 early on 15 October. The BiasNex engine reads BTC's 4h structure as neutral, while ETH, XRP and DOGE are bearish.
What happened
The BLS CPI release came out on Wednesday 14 October at 8:30 a.m. ET, which is 12:30 UTC (15:30 MSK). For September, all-items CPI rose 0.6% on the month and 3.7% on the year, up from 3.4% in August. Core CPI, which strips out food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month and 2.6% on the year. The gasoline index rose 9.1% over the month, seasonally adjusted.
FinanceFeeds reported the headline print as above a 3.6% consensus and said the 10-year Treasury yield approached 5.3%. It linked the move to renewed concern about further Federal Reserve rate increases, and put the next Fed meeting at 27-28 October.
CoinDesk, 15 October 04:25 UTC, cites CoinGlass for about $483 million of BTC and ETH futures liquidations over 24 hours: roughly $286 million in ETH and $197 million in BTC, plus about $31 million in SOL and $19 million in ZEC. CoinDesk attributes the sell-off to uncertainty over the Fed's next rate decision.
Bitcoin drop after CPI: what the chart did

The 12:30 UTC candle opened at $83,860 and its range ran from $83,933 down to $82,606. Just before it, the engine had already marked a bearish BOS on the 15m chart, and the print candle closed through that level. Price kept sliding for about four hours and then ranged around $81,500 to $82,000 through the US evening.
| Window from the 12:30 UTC open | BTC | ETH |
|---|---|---|
| +1h | −1.4% | −1.8% |
| +4h | −2.5% | −3.3% |
| +24h | — | — |
The 24h window closes at 12:30 UTC on 15 October, so it is not measured yet. The low since the print is $80,226 on BTC, which came in the 02:00 UTC hour on 15 October, 4.3% under the pre-release open. At 07:38 UTC BTC traded near $81,240.
Structure context

Every tracked coin in the strip is lower over 24 hours, but the bias readings are not uniform. Bitcoin is neutral in a range (24h −2.6%). Ethereum is bearish in a trend (−5.3%), as are XRP (−4.7%) and Dogecoin (−5.4%). Solana still reads bullish on 4h despite a −4.6% day, so its trend structure has not broken yet. ZEC is neutral after the largest drop, −11.9%.
That split matters: the shock hit everything, but only ETH, XRP and DOGE have a 4h structure that confirms the selling. A BOS continues the trend; a CHoCH is what would flip a bullish read such as SOL's. Read more on how we compute bias in the methodology and on market structure.
What to watch next
- Fed meeting, 27-28 October. FinanceFeeds names these as the next policy meeting dates; the market is pricing the CPI print against that decision.
- $80,000. FinanceFeeds cites this psychological level, with a technical level near $79,700. The overnight low of $80,226 sits just above both.
- 12:30 UTC today. The 24h reaction closes, and the table above can be completed.
- SOL's 4h bias. A CHoCH on the 4h chart would be the first structural sign that the one bullish read has turned.
