USDT vs USDC comes down to what you do with the coin, not which one is "safer" in the abstract. As of 13 Oct 2026, USDT is the larger stablecoin by market cap ($184.0B against $72.7B for USDC on CoinGecko), and both trade within a fraction of a cent of $1. Their issuers differ in how often they publish reserves, what the reserves hold and who can redeem directly, so check those points against your venue, your country and the size you hold.

This guide sets out what Tether and Circle each state on their own pages, plus real USDC/USDT price data. It does not pick a winner. Market caps and prices change daily, and the issuer claims below are claims, not audits.

USDT vs USDC: what each issuer says about reserves

Both are fiat-backed stablecoins that aim to hold a 1:1 value against the US dollar. Tether issues USDT. Circle issues USDC through regulated affiliates, in its own words.

What the two issuers' pages say:

  • Backing. Tether's site says tokens are "backed 100% by Tether's reserves", which its FAQ says include traditional currency, cash equivalents and other assets, including receivables from loans Tether has made to third parties. Circle says USDC is "100% backed by highly liquid cash and cash-equivalent assets", and that the majority sits in the Circle Reserve Fund (USDXX), an SEC-registered government money market fund.
  • Reporting. Tether says it typically publishes circulation data daily and reserve information quarterly. Circle says it discloses reserve holdings weekly, and that a Big Four accounting firm gives monthly assurance that reserves exceed USDC in circulation. Circle's reserve page was dated 8 Oct 2026 when we checked.
  • Redemption. Tether's FAQ says tokens are redeemable for fiat under its terms of service, and that new users pay a non-refundable verification fee of 150 USDT. Circle says USDC is redeemable 1:1 for US dollars, with direct redemption through Circle Mint limited to institutions. Individuals use exchanges, neobanks and wallets.
  • Chains. Circle lists 38 networks as of 16 Sep 2026. Tether's site names several, including Ethereum, Solana, TON and Tron, and links to a longer list.

We could not read Tether's latest attestation figures from its own pages today, so we quote no Tether reserve totals. Open the Tether transparency page and the Circle transparency page for the current numbers.

How USDC/USDT trades day to day

If both coins hold their pegs, the pair USDC/USDT should sit near 1.000. On Binance spot, over the week 6 to 13 Oct 2026, the hourly candles ranged from 0.9998 to 1.005. The high was a single one-hour wick; most candles sat between 1.000 and 1.002.

The pair is the market's own price of one coin in terms of the other. A reading above 1.000 means USDC costs slightly more USDT. It does not tell you which of the two is off its dollar peg, so look at each coin against USD as well. CoinGecko listed USDT at $0.9992 and USDC at $0.9997 when we checked.

What happened to USDC in March 2023

Stablecoins can lose their peg. The clearest recent case is USDC in March 2023. Circle said on 12 Mar 2023 that $3.3B of USDC reserves, about 8% of the total, sat in deposits at Silicon Valley Bank, and that the rest, as of 11 Mar, was 77% short-dated US Treasury bills ($32.4B) and 23% cash ($9.7B). It stated that USDC remained redeemable 1:1. On 15 Mar it said it had redeemed about $3.8B and minted about $0.8B since the Monday morning, and had cleared substantially all of the backlog.

The chart shows what the market did with that news on Binance. The first hourly candle our fetch returned (14:00 UTC, 11 Mar) printed a low of 0.882. The pair climbed through 12 Mar and was back near 0.99 by the start of 13 Mar. Quotes on other venues differed, and the chart starts where the data we pulled starts, so treat it as one venue's record. The episode shows that a peg rests on reserves, redemption access and where the reserves sit, not only on the label.

How to choose between USDT and USDC

Checklist of five points for choosing between USDT and USDC: pairs, venue and country, reserve reports, swap cost and chain
A checklist, not a recommendation

Go through the numbered points in the figure:

  1. Pairs. Hold the coin your markets quote. Holding the other one means a conversion on each trade, with its own spread and fee. Compare with the position size calculator when fees matter for a tight stop.
  2. Venue and country. Availability depends on the exchange and your jurisdiction. Check the exchange's own listing and terms for your country.
  3. Reserve reports. Decide which cadence and reserve description you accept. Weekly holdings and quarterly reserves are different amounts of information. Neither guarantees a peg.
  4. Swap cost. A USDC/USDT conversion costs the spread plus the exchange fee. The week above had an hourly range under half a cent, so on a liquid venue the spread is the number to look at.
  5. Chain. Check the network you plan to move the coin on. Support and transfer fees differ by chain.

Many traders keep both: one as the trading quote, one as a place to park funds. That is a choice about convenience and counterparty spread, not a signal. If you hold stablecoins through a macro data release, the CPI explainer covers what that print can do to the market. Stablecoin-margined futures also depend on the exchange's mark price, which the mark price vs last price guide covers. For the wider reference, see the Trader's Handbook and the Bitcoin market page.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Reading a stablecoin's market cap rank as a safety rating. Rank says size, not reserve quality.
  • Treating the USDC/USDT pair as proof that both are at $1. It is a ratio.
  • Holding more on one venue than you can afford to have frozen. Exchanges and issuers can pause redemptions or withdrawals; hot vs cold wallets covers keeping part of it off the exchange.
  • Using a dated reserve figure from an article, including this one. Open the issuer page for the current report.

FAQ

Is USDT or USDC safer? Neither issuer's claim is an audit, and we do not rank them. Compare what each publishes on reserves, how often, and whether you can redeem with the issuer or only through an exchange.

Is USDC the same as USDT? No. Both aim to track the US dollar, but different companies issue them with different reserve disclosures, redemption routes and chain support. Their market caps differ: $184.0B for USDT and $72.7B for USDC on CoinGecko as of 13 Oct 2026.

Can I redeem USDT or USDC for dollars directly? Tether says tokens are redeemable under its terms of service after account verification. Circle says direct redemption through Circle Mint is for institutions, and individuals use exchanges, neobanks or wallets.

Has USDC ever lost its peg? Yes. In March 2023 USDC/USDT printed a low of 0.882 on Binance after Circle disclosed $3.3B of reserves held at Silicon Valley Bank. Circle said USDC remained redeemable 1:1 and the pair recovered within days.
