Crypto weekend trading works the same way as the rest of the week at the exchange level: spot markets, perpetual futures and funding keep running on Saturday and Sunday. What changes is who is around. The traditional markets that anchor the trading day, such as the New York Stock Exchange, are not running a session, and in our data Bitcoin's weekend ranges and volumes are about half of its weekday ones.
This guide explains the mechanics: what closes, what stays open, and what that looks like in BTCUSDT data for the last 90 days. It is the explanatory version. A full study of holidays and weekends is planned for later, so here we measure only one window and say exactly which one.
What closes: the traditional-market clock
Traditional markets run on a fixed daily window. The NYSE's core trading session is 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET (NYSE hours and calendars, checked 14 Oct 2026). In UTC that is 13:30 to 20:00 while the US is on daylight time, which lasts until 1 Nov 2026, and 14:30 to 21:00 after the clocks change.
The same exchange publishes how many days it expects to trade. For 2026 its trading-days table lists 251 US cash equity trading days, and 22 of them fall in October. A year has 365 days. So US cash equities have no session on roughly a third of the calendar, and the weekends are most of that gap, with holidays on top.
Crypto spot has no such table. A BTCUSDT candle prints in every hour of every day, which you can see on any chart and which the Binance kline data we use here reflects.

On the figure, the blue band is the whole day and the amber band is the NYSE core session. Saturday and Sunday keep the blue band and lose the amber one. For the main windows inside the day, see kill zones vs sessions and the trading sessions tool.
Crypto weekend trading: what stays open
Nothing about a crypto exchange depends on the equity calendar:
- Spot trades continuously, so you can buy or sell BTC at 03:00 UTC on a Sunday.
- Perpetual futures have no expiry, so there is no weekend close to roll through.
- Funding keeps settling. On Binance the default funding interval is every 8 hours, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC (Binance funding rate FAQ, checked 14 Oct 2026). A contract can have a different interval, and Binance reserves the right to change it in extreme volatility, so check the contract page for your pair.
That last point matters if you hold a leveraged position over a weekend. Funding is charged or paid on its normal schedule whether the stock market is open or not. The liquidation price calculator shows how far price has to move to liquidate your position, and a weekend does not change that.
What changes: who is trading
The market is open, but fewer of its usual participants are working. We measured two things for BTCUSDT on Binance spot, daily candles, 15 Jul to 12 Oct 2026 (90 days, UTC days):
- Average daily range (high minus low, as a % of the open): 3.21% on weekdays and 1.44% on Saturday and Sunday.
- Average daily volume: 17.9k BTC on weekdays and 8.6k BTC on weekend days.

The weekend average is less than half of the weekday average on both measures. Split by day, the weekdays are fairly even, with Friday the highest, and Saturday and Sunday are almost identical on volume.

This is one 90-day window on one pair. It is a description of that window, not a rule for the next weekend. A different window or coin can give different numbers, which is why the planned holiday study uses a longer sample.
What the numbers do not tell you is why. We do not claim a cause here. The practical point is smaller: when there is less volume, the same order is a larger share of what trades, so the price you get can differ more from the price you saw.
How it looks on a real chart
Here is one weekend as it happened. The chart is BTCUSDT 1h from Friday 9 Oct 12:00 UTC to Monday 12 Oct 20:00 UTC, with Saturday and Sunday shaded. The data is Binance spot klines, fetched on 14 Oct 2026.
- Quiet Saturday. Hourly volume stayed low through the weekend. The lowest hour was 106 BTC, at 19:00 UTC on Saturday 10 Oct. For comparison, the 13:00 UTC candle on Monday 12 Oct traded 945 BTC.
- A fast move on little warning. On Sunday 11 Oct the 15:00 UTC candle opened at 83,129.91 and closed at 83,908.89, up 0.94% in one hour on 839 BTC. We do not know the reason and make no claim about it. The point is that a weekend is quiet on average, not in every hour.
- Monday before the open. The 12:00 UTC candle on Monday fell from 83,396.60 to 82,759.02, down 0.76% on 888 BTC, 90 minutes before the NYSE core session started at 13:30 UTC (the US is on daylight time, so that is 9:30 ET).

What the chart shows: a flat, low-volume Saturday, one sharp hour on Sunday, and hourly volume rising on Monday morning, with 834 BTC at 07:00 UTC and 1,356 BTC at 08:00 UTC. It is one weekend. Do not read it as a pattern.
If you track the daily and weekly levels, note that Binance weekly candles open at 00:00 UTC on Monday, as described in daily, weekly and monthly opens. That makes Saturday and Sunday the last two days of the weekly candle, and the Monday 00:00 UTC open starts the next one.
Common mistakes
- Treating the weekend as a closed market. Your stop, your liquidation level and funding all stay live. Plan the position as you would for a Tuesday.
- Assuming it is always calm. The average is lower, but single hours can move sharply, as Sunday 15:00 UTC did above.
- Using weekday position size on thin volume. The same size is a larger share of what trades. Recheck your risk with the position size calculator and consider whether a smaller size fits.
- Forgetting the Monday handover. The NYSE core session starts at 13:30 UTC on weekdays while the US is on daylight time. A weekend position is still open when that happens, and Monday 12 Oct above shows volume rising well before it.
- Quoting one weekend as evidence. One chart shows one case. Use a dated sample and say how many weekends it covers.
Where to practice
Open the Bitcoin market page and look at the 1h chart across a Saturday and Sunday. Write down the range, the hours with the lowest volume and the Monday open. If you want to compare hours, best time to trade crypto shows the hourly profile for BTC. More guides are in the Learn ICT hub.
FAQ
Is crypto traded on weekends? Yes. Spot, perpetual futures and funding on exchanges such as Binance run every day of the week. Traditional exchanges like the NYSE run a fixed daily session instead (core hours 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET).
Is Bitcoin more volatile on weekends? In our 90-day window (15 Jul to 12 Oct 2026, BTCUSDT daily candles) it was less so on average: a daily range of 1.44% on weekends against 3.21% on weekdays. Single hours can still move sharply, and another window can give different figures.
Does funding stop on weekends? No. On Binance the default funding interval is every 8 hours at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC, every day. Individual contracts can use a different interval, so check the contract page.
Is it safe to hold a leveraged position over the weekend? Nothing changes mechanically: liquidation and funding work as on any other day. Lower weekend volume means a given order is a larger share of what trades, so size and stop placement deserve a second look.
