BNB is the native token of BNB Chain and the token at the center of the Binance ecosystem. It pays gas on BNB Smart Chain, it can be staked, and its supply falls through scheduled burns. If you are asking what is BNB from a trader's side: over the 90 days to 12 October 2026 it behaved like a slightly livelier Bitcoin, with an average daily range of 2.86% against BTC's 2.72% and a 0.70 correlation to BTC.
This guide gives you BNB's role, then the numbers we computed ourselves from Binance candles: when it moves, how its supply is shrinking, where it trades, how tied it is to Bitcoin and how its structure reads right now. Every figure is dated.
What is BNB and what does it do
BNB Chain's own documentation says BNB serves "as both the gas of smart contract execution and tokens for staking". The chain runs on Proof of Staked Authority with 45 validators (21 Cabinet and 24 Candidates), and its docs give the current block time as 0.45 seconds after the Lorentz, Maxwell and Fermi hardforks (BNB Chain docs, checked 12 Oct 2026).
CoinGecko lists BNB with a genesis date of 8 July 2017, a rank of 4 by market cap, a price of $746.80 and a market cap of about $99.4 billion on 12 October 2026. Binance is also by far the biggest venue for BNB spot trading in our data (more below).
How BNB trades: the 90-day fingerprint
Our fingerprint takes every 1h BNBUSDT candle from 14 July to 12 October 2026 (2,160 candles) and averages the high-to-low range per UTC hour. The result is on the cover and in the chart below.

Four numbers define it:
- Average daily range: 2.86%. Bitcoin's was 2.72% over the same window, so BNB's range is 1.05 times BTC's: close to the benchmark, not a high-beta alt.
- Busiest hour: 14:00 UTC (17:00 MSK), with an average hourly range of 0.78%. The two neighbours, 13:00 and 15:00, both average 0.70%.
- Quietest hours: 19:00 and 20:00 UTC, at 0.39%. The peak hour moves twice as much as the quietest ones.
- By session (our UTC buckets): 13:00 to 21:00 UTC averages 0.57% per hour, 08:00 to 13:00 averages 0.52%, 00:00 to 08:00 averages 0.51%, and 21:00 to midnight is the lowest at 0.43%.
Days matter too. Across the last 89 closed days Thursday and Friday were BNB's widest (3.32% and 3.23% average daily range) and Sunday and Tuesday the narrowest (2.47% and 2.42%). Weekends averaged 2.66% against 2.94% on weekdays. Ten of the 89 days ranged more than 5%; the widest was 5 September at 8.5%, followed by 8 October at 7.7% and 22 August at 6.4%. How Binance events show up on the chart
BNB is the one coin where the venue's own calendar is a natural thing to test. The quarterly burn is the scheduled event, so we checked the daily candle on each of the three 2026 burn report dates against the average range of the 30 days before it:
| Burn report | Daily range that day | Prior 30-day average range | Close vs open |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Jan 2026 (34th) | 2.61% | 2.80% | -1.82% |
| 15 Apr 2026 (35th) | 2.80% | 3.07% | +1.44% |
| 15 Jul 2026 (36th) | 1.63% | 3.12% | -0.23% |
All three days were quieter than normal. Three observations are not a pattern, and a burn is announced on a fixed schedule, so the market has long known it is coming. The useful reading is the opposite of the headline: a scheduled burn is not a volatility event.
BNB supply: the quarterly burn
BNB Chain says its Auto-Burn system exists to "gradually reduce its total supply to 100,000,000 BNB". The amount burned each quarter is adjusted by BNB's price and the number of blocks produced on BSC in that quarter (BNB Chain, 35th burn report). The burns in 2026 so far:
- 34th burn (January 2026): 1,371,803.77 BNB burned, leaving 136,361,374.34 BNB.
- 35th burn (15 April 2026): 1,569,307.34 BNB burned, leaving 134,786,916.53 BNB.
- 36th burn (15 July 2026): 1,615,827.795 BNB burned, leaving 133,166,127.91 BNB.
Three burns removed about 4.56 million BNB. CoinGecko shows 133.16 million BNB in circulation on 12 October 2026 and a maximum supply of 200 million.

There is no unlock calendar to track: supply only goes down. The remaining gap to the 100 million target is about 33.2 million BNB. The next report follows the quarterly cycle, so check the BNB Chain blog for the latest total before you rely on these numbers.
Where BNB trades
We pulled 24-hour spot volume from the public tickers of nine venues on 12 October 2026 at about 20:30 UTC.

Binance printed $73.2 million, which is 63% of the $116.1 million across the nine venues. MEXC ($14.7 million), Gate ($10.9 million) and OKX ($8.3 million) follow; Coinbase ($1.1 million) and Kraken ($0.9 million) are thin. BNB perpetuals dwarf spot: Binance's perpetual traded $252.4 million in the same 24 hours and Bybit's $21.7 million. For a comparison of those two derivative venues, see Binance vs Bybit futures.
The practical consequence is that "BNB price" is mostly Binance's order book. Moves on a thin venue are usually arbitrage noise, not information.
BNB vs BTC
Over the 90 days, BNB's daily returns correlated 0.70 with Bitcoin's. That is lower than Dogecoin's 0.83 in the same window and says BNB has more of its own rhythm than most large alts. It is not stable, though.

The rolling 30-day correlation started the window at 0.83, fell to 0.50 in mid-August, recovered to 0.84 in early September and ended at 0.73. If you hedge BNB with BTC, size the hedge for the correlation you have this month, not the 90-day average. Start with our Bitcoin guide for the benchmark itself.
Reading BNB's structure
The chart shows BNBUSDT on the 1h timeframe from 9 to 12 October 2026, with the BiasNex engine's structure events and the previous-day levels (PDH 758.44, PDL 744.77).

Read it left to right. At 14:00 UTC on 11 October the engine marked a bullish change of character at 749.41, and an hour later a bullish break of structure at 753.86. Price then pushed to the previous-day high zone near 758 and rolled over. At 16:00 UTC on 12 October the engine marked a bearish CHoCH at 744.77, which is also the previous-day low. That is a first warning, not a trend change: the market structure view needs a lower high and a lower low on the higher timeframe to confirm. The engine's live read for the coin sits on the BNB markets page, and the chart above is a snapshot of 12 October.
Risks
- Venue concentration. BNB's value and liquidity are tied to one exchange. A change in how Binance operates, or in its regulatory position, shows up in BNB directly.
- Supply is not the price. Burns shrink supply on a schedule the market already prices. Our table above shows no burn-day reaction.
- Correlation drifts. A 0.50 to 0.84 swing in 90 days means a BTC hedge can be too big or too small.
- Position size. BNB's 2.86% average daily range means a 3% stop is inside normal noise. Size from the stop with the position size calculator.
