Dogecoin (DOGE) is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency that began in 2013 as a joke and kept going: it has no maximum supply, adds 10,000 new coins with every block, and trades in much wider ranges than Bitcoin. If you want to know what is Dogecoin from a trader's side, the numbers say it plainly. Over the 90 days to 12 October 2026 its average daily range was 4.98%, 1.83 times Bitcoin's, and its daily returns tracked BTC at a 0.83 correlation.
This guide covers what Dogecoin is, what our own candle data says about when and how much it moves, how its supply grows, where it trades, how it relates to Bitcoin and how its structure reads on the 4h chart. Every number is dated.
What is Dogecoin and how does it work
The official site, dogecoin.com, credits Jackson Palmer and Shibetoshi Nakamoto as its creators and says it runs on Proof of Work; miners earn 10,000 DOGE per block. The Dogecoin Core software uses the Scrypt hashing method for Proof of Work (Dogecoin Core README on GitHub). CoinGecko lists a genesis date of 8 December 2013, and on 12 October 2026 a rank of 12 by market cap, a price of $0.0853 and a market cap of about $13.3 billion.
There is no fixed cap. CoinGecko reports no maximum supply for DOGE, and the code's subsidy rule keeps the 10,000 DOGE reward constant after the early halving schedule ends. That shapes the whole supply section below.
How Dogecoin trades: the 90-day fingerprint
We took every 1h DOGEUSDT candle from 14 July to 12 October 2026 (2,160 candles) and averaged the high-to-low range for each UTC hour.

- Average daily range: 4.98%. Bitcoin's was 2.72% over the same window, so DOGE's range is 1.83 times BTC's.
- Busiest hour: 14:00 UTC (17:00 MSK), averaging 1.38% per hour, followed by 15:00 (1.21%) and 13:00 (1.13%).
- Quietest hour: 11:00 UTC, at 0.68%. The peak hour is twice as wide.
- By session (our UTC buckets): 13:00 to 21:00 UTC averages 1.05% per hour, well above 00:00 to 08:00 (0.85%), 21:00 to midnight (0.86%) and 08:00 to 13:00 (0.84%). In other words the London window is Dogecoin's quietest and New York's afternoon its loudest.
The daily picture is where Dogecoin differs most from a large-cap coin. In the last 89 closed days, 33 had a daily range above 5%, about 37% of days. The median daily range was 3.82%, well under the 4.98% average, because a handful of days pull the mean up. The three widest days were 22 August (19.4% range, closing just +0.4% from the open), 21 August (17.9%, +13.8%) and 21 September (17.1%, +14.4%). We do not tie those days to any specific post or headline; we have no source that does. For a trader, the takeaway is that a 15% or larger swing can show up inside one day and can also fully retrace.
Fridays were the widest weekday at an average 5.81% daily range, Sundays the narrowest at 3.89%. Weekends averaged 4.44% against 5.19% on weekdays. For turning this into a schedule, see the best time to trade crypto study and the trading sessions tool.
Dogecoin supply: steady issuance, no cap
Dogecoin Core's chain parameters set a 60-second target block spacing (nPowTargetSpacing = 60), and the block subsidy function returns 10,000 DOGE once the early schedule has passed (validation.cpp, Dogecoin Core on GitHub, checked 12 Oct 2026). At the target rate that is 1,440 blocks and 14.4 million new DOGE per day, or about 5.26 billion a year.
CoinGecko shows 156.30 billion DOGE circulating on 12 October 2026. Dividing the yearly issuance by that supply gives the dilution rate, which falls only slowly because the supply base grows:

This is schedule arithmetic, not a forecast of price or of real block times, which vary around the target. It does tell you what kind of asset DOGE is: there is no unlock cliff and no burn, just a constant flow of new coins that miners receive.
Where Dogecoin trades
We read 24-hour spot volume from the public tickers of nine venues on 12 October 2026 at about 20:30 UTC.

Binance printed $46.7 million, followed by OKX ($27.6 million) and Gate ($20.5 million); Binance is 34% of the $136.6 million across the nine. No single venue dominates the way Binance does for BNB.
The larger fact is leverage. Binance's DOGE perpetual traded $356.2 million in the same 24 hours, 7.6 times its spot volume, and Bybit's perpetual traded $74.6 million against $7.2 million of spot. Most Dogecoin trading is derivatives, so liquidation-driven moves are part of the profile. Read Binance vs Bybit futures before you trade it on margin.
Dogecoin vs BTC
Over the 90 days, DOGE's daily returns correlated 0.83 with Bitcoin's. That makes it a high-beta bet on Bitcoin's direction, not a diversifier.

The rolling 30-day correlation started the window at 0.83, fell to 0.54 in mid-August and then climbed back; it ended at 0.89, the highest reading in the window. When BTC drives the tape, DOGE moves with it, with a larger range. BNB correlated 0.70 over the same window; see the Bitcoin guide for the benchmark.
Reading Dogecoin's structure
The chart shows DOGEUSDT on the 4h timeframe from 30 September to 12 October 2026, with the BiasNex engine's structure events and previous-day levels (PDH 0.0877, PDL 0.0849).

Price fell through 0.0878 on 8 October at 04:00 UTC, which the engine marked as a bearish break of structure. On 10 October at 00:00 UTC it marked a bullish change of character at 0.0856, and on 11 October at 12:00 UTC a bullish BOS at 0.0867. The engine's 4h read was still a bearish correction when we rendered this, and the last candle was back at the previous-day low near 0.0849. In market structure terms, the bullish breaks sit inside a larger down-leg from the highs of early October, so they are an attempt at recovery, not a confirmed reversal. The engine's live read for the coin is on the Dogecoin markets page; the chart is a snapshot of 12 October.
Risks
- Range. A 4.98% average daily range, and a 3.82% median, means a 3% stop sits inside ordinary daily noise.
- Derivatives-driven moves. With perpetuals at 7.6 times spot on Binance, leveraged positions can amplify moves in both directions.
- No cap. New issuance continues indefinitely, so the supply side does not tighten the way a burn-based token's does.
- High correlation. At 0.83 with BTC, holding both adds less diversification than it appears to.
