The FOMC decision is the Federal Reserve's scheduled call on US interest rates, and for crypto it is a fixed-time volatility event. The committee publishes its statement at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, which was 18:00 UTC and 21:00 MSK at all four 2026 meetings we checked. Bitcoin can move sharply in the minutes after it, but the direction was not the same each time, so the FOMC is a moment to manage risk, not a signal.
This guide explains what the FOMC decides, when the statement lands in UTC and MSK, and what BTC did after the last four statements, using federalreserve.gov pages and Binance candles fetched on 13 Oct 2026.
What the FOMC decision means for crypto
The Federal Open Market Committee is the part of the Federal Reserve that sets US monetary policy. The Fed's own page says it "consists of twelve members": the seven members of the Board of Governors, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and four of the other eleven Reserve Bank presidents, who rotate yearly. It holds eight regularly scheduled meetings per year and at those meetings determines the appropriate stance of monetary policy.
In practice the headline of each meeting is the target range for the federal funds rate. Crypto traders watch it because the cost of money feeds expectations about the dollar and risk appetite. That is a chain of arguments, not a law. In the sample below, the rate decision itself was a hold three times and a hike once, and BTC's reaction differed from one meeting to the next.
The 2026 meetings we checked
We read the four most recent statements on federalreserve.gov. Every one of them is marked "For release at 2:00 p.m. EDT".
| Meeting | Decision (federal funds target range) | Vote |
|---|---|---|
| 28-29 Apr 2026 | Maintained at 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 percent | 8 - 4 |
| 16-17 Jun 2026 | Maintained at 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 percent | 12 - 0 |
| 28-29 Jul 2026 | Maintained at 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 percent | 9 - 3 |
| 15-16 Sep 2026 | Raised by 1/4 percentage point to 3-3/4 to 4 percent | 12 - 0 |
The next meeting on the Fed's calendar is 27-28 Oct 2026. Each date on that calendar is tentative until it is confirmed at the meeting before it, so check the Fed calendar before you plan around it.
When the statement comes out
The Fed publishes in Eastern Time. Convert it to your own clock:
| Period | Statement | UTC | MSK |
|---|---|---|---|
| US daylight time (EDT, until 1 Nov 2026) | 2:00 p.m. ET | 18:00 | 21:00 |
| US standard time (EST, from 1 Nov 2026) | 2:00 p.m. ET | 19:00 | 22:00 |
The second row is a conversion, not a quote: if the Fed keeps 2:00 p.m. Eastern, the December meeting lands an hour later on UTC and MSK clocks. The Fed's calendar also lists press conferences and Summary of Economic Projections for some meetings, so check the Fed's site for the exact schedule of each one. Minutes of regular meetings are released three weeks after the date of the policy decision, per the same calendar page. By that rule the September minutes fell on 7 Oct 2026.

For where that hour sits in the trading day, see BTC's trading sessions.
What BTC did after four FOMC statements
We pulled BTCUSDT five-minute candles from Binance spot for each statement day. The reference price is the close of the 17:55 UTC candle, the last price before the 18:00 statement. Then we measured the close 30 and 60 minutes later, and the high-to-low range of the first hour against the same reference.

| Statement (18:00 UTC) | +30 min | +60 min | Range, hour after | Range, hour before |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 29 Apr 2026 (hold) | -1.36% | -0.88% | 1.8% | 0.5% |
| 17 Jun 2026 (hold) | -1.06% | -0.89% | 2.0% | 0.6% |
| 29 Jul 2026 (hold) | -0.27% | +0.36% | 1.4% | 0.9% |
| 16 Sep 2026 (hike) | +0.33% | -0.18% | 2.0% | 0.8% |
Three of the four windows were lower after 30 minutes, two of them by more than 1%, and one was higher. That is a sample of four from one exchange and says nothing about the next meeting. What the four share is the size: the hour after the statement had a wider high-to-low range than the hour before it every time, between 1.4% and 2.0% against 0.5% to 0.9%.
A worked example: 16 Sep 2026
Step through one meeting. The FOMC statement came out at 18:00 UTC on 16 Sep 2026, with the target range raised by a quarter point, by a 12 - 0 vote.

- Before the statement. BTC closed the 17:55 candle at 75,768. The hour before had traded in a range of 0.8%.
- First hour. Price spiked to 76,561 in the 18:05 candle (+1.05%) and fell to 75,065 in the 18:35 candle (-0.93%). That is a 1.97% range.
- Thirty minutes later. The 18:25 candle closed at 76,015, up 0.33%.
- One hour later. The 18:55 candle closed at 75,632, down 0.18%. The close was back near where it started.
A trader who read the 30-minute close as "the Fed was bullish" would have been wrong about the next half hour. Check your stop against that range, not against the direction.
How to handle FOMC day without guessing
- Know the time. Put 18:00 UTC (19:00 UTC after the clocks change) in your calendar. For the macro schedule beyond the FOMC, see ICT macro times.
- Size for the range. If a stop sits inside a typical 1% to 2% hour, the statement can take it out before the move you wanted. The position size calculator sets size from stop distance.
- Mind leverage. A wick of 1% to 2% can reach a liquidation level on a leveraged position within minutes. The liquidation price calculator shows where yours sits.
- Wait for the candles. Many traders stand aside for the first minutes and read structure afterwards. See BTC's live structure.
- Compare with other macro events. The same exercise for inflation data is in what CPI means for crypto; the chart reaction to a hot print is in Bitcoin after the hot US CPI.

Mistakes to avoid
- Treating one decision as a pattern. Four statements do not make a rule.
- Trading the headline. The rate decision is one input. The statement text and the committee's vote carry information too, and we do not publish forecasts or consensus numbers here.
- Reading the first candle. The 16 Sep example was up 0.33% at +30 minutes and down 0.18% at +60.
- Forgetting the clock change. The statement stays at 2:00 p.m. ET while its UTC and MSK times shift by an hour.

How often does the FOMC meet? The Fed says the FOMC holds eight regularly scheduled meetings per year, and other meetings as needed. The calendar we checked on 13 Oct 2026 lists 27-28 Oct and 8-9 Dec as the remaining 2026 meetings.
