What is Solana? Solana (SOL) is a smart-contract blockchain, and SOL is its native coin. For a trader, the defining fact is how far it travels. Over the 90 days to 11 October 2026 SOL's average daily range was 4.3%, which is 1.57 times Bitcoin's, and 5 days ran past 9.5% while BTC had none. This guide sets out how SOL moves, using our own computed numbers,.

All statistics come from Binance spot candles for 14 July to 11 October 2026 (UTC). Supply and inflation facts are from CoinGecko (fetched 12 October 2026) and Solana's documentation. Nothing here is a forecast.

What is Solana

Solana's documentation describes its timekeeping with Proof of History (PoH): "a stack of proofs, each of which proves that some data existed before the proof was created". A slot is the period in which a leader ingests transactions and produces a block, and slots take roughly equal real-world time as measured by PoH. You do not need the mechanics to trade SOL. What matters is that SOL is a smaller market than BTC or ETH, with a market capitalisation of about $64 billion on 12 October 2026, seventh on CoinGecko.

How SOL moves: the fingerprint

The cover is SOL's fingerprint: the average 1h range by UTC hour, the busiest hour and the daily range. SOL's average daily range is 4.3% and its median 3.5%, against 2.3% for BTC. Only 9 of the 90 days stayed under 2%, while 7 ran to 8% or more and 3 reached 10%.

SOL's average hourly range peaks at 14:00 UTC at 1.23% and is lowest at 10:00 UTC at 0.63%
Binance SOLUSDT · 1h · 14 Jul to 11 Oct 2026 · UTC

SOL shares BTC's clock but with a flatter base. The 1h range rises from 0.93% at 12:00 UTC to 1.06% at 13:00 and peaks at 1.23% at 14:00 UTC (17:00 in Moscow, 10:00 in New York). The quietest hour is 10:00 UTC at 0.63%, so the peak hour is about 1.9 times as active, a smaller gap than BTC's 2.3 or ETH's 2.2. By session, the average hourly range is 0.75% in Asia (00:00 to 08:00 UTC), 0.75% in London (08:00 to 13:00) and 0.90% in New York (13:00 to 21:00). Asia and London are tied, and New York runs about 20% hotter. SOL's quietest hour (0.63%) is busier than BTC's 24-hour average (0.48%). Check trading sessions for our session definitions.

Weekends barely slow SOL down. Its average daily range is 3.48% on weekend days against 4.60% on weekdays, so a weekend day keeps 76% of a weekday's range. For BTC the same ratio is 45%.

Supply and inflation

CoinGecko, on 12 October 2026, shows 589.11 million SOL circulating out of 635.66 million total, with no maximum supply listed. The fully diluted valuation was about $69.0 billion against a market capitalisation of about $64.0 billion.

589.11 million SOL are circulating out of 635.66 million total supply
CoinGecko · coins/solana · fetched 12 Oct 2026

Circulating supply is 92.7% of the total. Because Solana has no hard cap, the rule that matters is its inflation schedule. Solana's documentation states an initial inflation rate of 8% a year, which falls by 15% year over year toward a long-term rate of 1.5%. The documentation describes the schedule, not today's rate, and we do not calculate the current figure here. Check Solana's documentation or an on-chain source for it before you rely on it.

Where it trades

We pulled the rolling 24-hour spot volume of SOL from the public ticker APIs of five exchanges on 12 October 2026 at 20:18 UTC.

Binance carries 48% of SOL spot volume across the five venues, Coinbase 20%
Exchange public ticker APIs · 24h spot volume · 12 Oct 2026, 20:18 UTC

Binance leads with $205 million (48% of the five-venue total of about $430 million), then Coinbase with $87 million (20%), OKX with $73 million (17%), Bybit with $44 million (10%) and KuCoin with $21 million (5%). Coinbase ranks second for SOL, ahead of OKX and Bybit, which is not the case for BTC or ETH. Coinbase is the USD pair and the rest are USDT pairs.

SOL vs BTC

SOL's range is wider than BTC's. It also moves with it. The daily returns of the two correlated 0.83 over 90 days, and the beta of SOL's daily returns to BTC's was 1.23, the same as ETH's. The difference is in the intraday travel: SOL's range is 1.57 times BTC's, but its close-to-close beta is only 1.23. SOL covers more distance inside the day than the daily close shows.

Each dot is one day: SOL's median daily range is 3.5% against 2.3% for BTC, with five SOL days above 9.5%
Binance spot · 1d · 14 Jul to 11 Oct 2026 · UTC

The widest day, 22 August, covered 16.0% from low to high and closed up 0.1%. That is typical of SOL's wide, wick-heavy days: a large range does not always mean a large close-to-close move. Its daily return volatility was 2.94% against 1.99% for BTC.

SOL's rolling 30-day correlation with BTC ranged from 0.75 to 0.90 and ended at 0.87
Binance spot · daily returns · rolling 30 days · to 11 Oct 2026

Correlation has not been stable: the rolling 30-day figure ranged from 0.75 to 0.90 and ended at 0.87, against 0.83 for the full 90 days. When it dips, SOL is moving on its own flow and BTC signals matter less. Compare with Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP to see where SOL sits in the range ladder: BTC 1.00, ETH 1.35, SOL 1.57, XRP 1.82.

Reading SOL's structure

The 4h chart covers 3 to 12 October 2026, with the BiasNex engine's marks as of 12 October.

SOL 4h: the engine marks a BOS down, a CHoCH down and a CHoCH up, with the previous-day high at 112.75 and low at 108.96
SOLUSDT · 4h · 3 to 12 Oct 2026 · snapshot 12 Oct 2026

The engine marked a break of structure (BOS) to the downside, a change of character (CHoCH) to the downside, and a CHoCH back up. At the snapshot the previous-day high (PDH) was 112.75, a buy-side liquidity level (BSL) sat at 110.85, the previous-day low (PDL) at 108.96 and a sell-side liquidity level (SSL) far below at 102.07. See market structure and break of structure for the terms. This is a dated snapshot. For the current read, open today's live SOL structure.

Risks

  • Wide ranges, wide stops. With a range 1.57 times BTC's, the same position size risks more. Size from the stop distance with the position size calculator.
  • A few days drive the average. 22 August (16.0%), 19 August (13.7%) and 18 September (13.2%) lift the mean. The median (3.5%) is the safer guide to a normal day.
  • No supply cap. SOL's issuance follows an inflation schedule. Check the current rate.
  • Past ranges are not a promise. The numbers describe 90 days and can change.
