What is TRON? TRON is a proof-of-stake layer 1 blockchain, and TRX is its coin. In practice, most people know it as the network that carries a huge share of Tether's USDT. On 16 October 2026 CoinGecko ranked TRX 8th by market cap at $31.9 billion, and DefiLlama counted $92.9 billion of USDT issued on TRON, about 2.9 times that. The odd part for traders: USDT transfers on TRON were flat for 90 days, and TRX moved in a very narrow band, averaging a 1.26% daily range against 2.75% for Bitcoin.
Below: what TRON is and what its own docs say, why usage and price diverge, our 90-day hourly and weekday numbers, supply, venues, how TRX moves with BTC and ETH, and the risks. Every number comes from our own dated fetches or a named source.
What is TRON (TRX) and what does it do
CoinGecko lists TRON with a genesis date of 28 August 2017 and files it under "Smart Contract Platform", "Layer 1 (L1)", "Proof of Stake (PoS)" and "Tron Ecosystem" (checked 16 October 2026). It runs smart contracts, and the token standard that matters most is TRC20, the one Tether's USDT uses on the network. Tronscan lists the USDT contract on TRON with about 94.2 billion USDT of supply and 77.5 million holder addresses on 16 October.
The TRON developer docs describe a two-resource model. Bandwidth pays for transaction size, and each account gets a free quota of 600 Bandwidth per rolling 24 hours. Energy pays for smart contract execution, has no free quota, and comes from staking TRX or from energy delegated by others. A TRC20 transfer is a contract call, so it uses Energy. If an account has none, the docs say TRX is burned for the remainder. That burn is the direct link between USDT usage and the TRX coin. We did not find a per-transfer Energy figure in the docs, so we do not quote one.
The USDT rail: why usage and price diverge
The Tronscan statistics API gives a daily count of USDT transactions on TRON. Over the 90 days from 18 July to 15 October 2026 it averaged 2.25 million per day, with a low of 1.79 million and a high of 2.63 million. That is about 19% of all transactions Tronscan counted in the period. The daily count varied by only about 9% around its average.

We indexed both series to 100 on the first week. Weekly average USDT transfers ran between 98.7 and 106.4. The weekly average TRX close ran between 99.8 and 104.0, or $0.3276 to $0.3414. Neither trended. The correlation between the daily USDT count and the daily TRX close was -0.12, and between the day-to-day change in the count and the TRX daily return it was -0.09. In plain terms, in this window the busiest days on the rail were not the days TRX moved.
Why would that be? We can say what the data shows and what the docs allow. USDT supply is created by Tether, not by TRX buyers. A user moving USDT needs Energy or Bandwidth, and the docs say staking is one way to get it and burning TRX is the fallback. So usage can create some TRX demand at the margin, but a flat transfer count adds no new pressure, and a coin worth $31.9 billion is moved by much more than that. We do not claim the rail has no effect; we claim our 90-day sample shows none.
Active accounts fell during the window: the Tronscan daily active account count averaged 4.71 million in the first 30 days and 4.36 million in each of the next two 30-day blocks. USDT transfers did not follow it down. Read that as usage staying steady while the user base shrank slightly, and nothing more.
The supply side is just as concentrated. TRON holds more USDT than any other chain.

TRON carried $92.9 billion of the $183.5 billion total (50.6%), Ethereum $73.1 billion, BSC $9.2 billion and Solana $2.8 billion. Tronscan's own figure for the contract, 94.2 billion, differs slightly because the two count differently. How TRX trades: the 90-day fingerprint
We took every 1h TRXUSDT candle on Binance from 18 July to 15 October 2026 (2,161 candles) and averaged the high-to-low range per UTC hour.

- Average daily range: 1.26%. Bitcoin's was 2.75% over the same 90 daily candles, so TRX moved about 0.46 times as much. Ethereum's was 3.70%.
- Busiest hour: 16:00 UTC (19:00 MSK), averaging 0.26% per hour, then 10:00 (0.25%) and 13:00 (0.25%).
- Quietest hour: 21:00 UTC (00:00 MSK), at 0.15%. The peak is 1.8 times wider.
- By block: 10:00 to 16:00 UTC averages 0.24% per hour, 19:00 to 23:00 averages 0.16%. See our trading sessions tool for how those hours map to London and New York.
By weekday, Tuesday was widest (1.69% average daily range), then Thursday (1.40%), and Sunday narrowest (0.89%). The median day was 1.13%. No day in the 90 had a range above 5%, and only two were above 3%: 1 September (3.19%, close 3.07% below the open) and 25 August (3.10%, close 2.52% below the open). We do not tie them to news; we have no dated source for a cause.
Over the same window the price went from a $0.3258 close on 18 July to $0.3326 on 15 October (+2.1%), with a daily high of $0.3502 and low of $0.3217. Over the year to 15 October the daily high was $0.3775 and the low $0.2683. A 1.26% day means a 1% stop sits inside normal noise, so size from the stop with the position size calculator.
TRX supply: what we can and cannot say

CoinGecko shows about 95.0 billion TRX in circulation, within 6 thousand coins of the total supply, on 16 October. It lists no maximum supply. Market cap and fully diluted value are both $31.9 billion at a price of $0.3353. With nearly everything already circulating, there is no large locked tranche to unlock, which is a different risk profile from newer tokens. We did not find a dated unlock schedule from a primary source, and we do not guess at burn or staking totals.
Where TRX trades

We read the public 24h tickers for TRX/USDT on eight venues at about 12:00 UTC on 16 October. Binance printed $34.1 million, HTX $12.4 million and KuCoin $7.5 million, with MEXC ($6.6 million), Gate ($4.2 million), OKX ($2.4 million), Bybit ($2.3 million) and Bitget ($2.1 million) behind. The eight total $71.5 million. Perpetuals were bigger: Binance's TRXUSDT perpetual printed $58.2 million and Bybit's $8.9 million. Check live venues on our listings tracker.
TRX vs BTC and ETH

Over 90 daily candles TRX had a beta of 0.14 to BTC, a correlation of 0.36, and a correlation of 0.31 with ETH. The beta is low because TRX moves less than half as far as BTC even when the direction matches. The rolling 30-day line is not stable. BTC correlation peaked at 0.55 on 24 August and fell to 0.19 on 15 October. ETH correlation peaked at 0.54 and also fell to 0.22 on 15 October. A hedge of TRX with Bitcoin or Ethereum leaves most of the TRX movement unhedged. The last two points of the rolling lines dropped within two days, so check whether the drop persists before relying on it.
Reading TRX's structure
We do not have a live TRX markets page yet, so there is no engine read to quote. When you read TRX on your own chart, use market structure with its habits in mind: ranges of around 1.3% a day, quiet after 19:00 UTC, narrow weekends. Compare NEAR's 8.88% daily range in our NEAR explainer to see how different two coins in the same library can be. The full set is in the coin library.
Risks
- Narrow range, thin edge. A coin with a 1.26% daily range pays little for being right, and costs add up fast.
- Concentration in USDT. The rail depends on one issuer's token. An issue with USDT or its handling on TRON hits the usage the chain is known for.
- Loose and shifting BTC link. Correlation moved from 0.19 to 0.55 in 60 days, so a fixed hedge ratio does not hold.
- Unverified supply mechanics. We did not find a dated primary source for burn totals, so we make no claim on net issuance.
FAQ
What is TRON (TRX) used for? TRX is the native coin of the TRON blockchain. Per the TRON docs, staking TRX gives Energy and Bandwidth for transactions and contract calls, and TRX is burned if an account has none. In practice the chain is best known for USDT transfers.
Why does TRX not follow USDT usage? In our 90-day sample the daily USDT transaction count and the TRX close had a correlation of -0.12. USDT is issued by Tether, and a steady transfer count adds no new demand for TRX by itself.
When does TRX move the most? At 16:00 UTC (19:00 MSK), averaging 0.26% per hour, with 10:00 and 13:00 UTC next. Tuesday is the widest weekday and Sunday the narrowest.
