What is NEAR Protocol? It is a proof-of-stake layer 1 blockchain whose coin, NEAR, pays network fees and is staked by validators. NEAR now describes itself as infrastructure for AI agents, and CoinGecko files it under "Artificial Intelligence (AI)" next to "Layer 1 (L1)". For a trader the useful facts are different: over the 90 days to 12 October 2026 NEAR's average daily range was 8.88%, 3.3 times Bitcoin's 2.70%, and the coin ran at a beta of 1.32 to BTC with a correlation of only 0.42.

Below: what the project says it is and which of those claims we can check, our 90-day hourly profile, supply, venues, how NEAR moves with BTC and with Bittensor (TAO), the 1h structure and the risks. Every number is computed from our own fetches or taken from a named source, and each is dated.

What is NEAR Protocol and what does it say about AI

The NEAR developer docs (checked 13 October 2026) describe a chain where you build contracts in Rust, with finality in about 1.3 seconds and average fees of about $0.002. near.org describes 600 ms blocks with 1.2 second finality, and calls NEAR "the open infrastructure powering the agent economy". On AI, the docs list TEE-backed agents, where AI inference runs inside Trusted Execution Environments, and Chain Signatures, which let a NEAR account sign transactions on Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other chains. near.org adds NEAR AI private inference and says its co-founder Illia Polosukhin introduced the Transformer architecture.

Those are the project's own claims. We did not verify throughput, user numbers or product usage, and a market chart does not prove any of them. What we can state from a neutral source is classification: on 13 October CoinGecko lists NEAR in the categories "Artificial Intelligence (AI)", "Smart Contract Platform", "Layer 1 (L1)", "Data Availability", "Chain Abstraction" and "Privacy". Bittensor (TAO) sits in the same AI category, which is why we use it as the comparison below.

How NEAR trades: the 90-day fingerprint

We took every 1h NEARUSDT candle on Binance from 15 July to 12 October 2026 (2,160 candles) and averaged the high-to-low range for each UTC hour.

NEAR's hourly range peaks at 15:00 UTC, with the 14:00 to 16:00 UTC block the widest of the day
NEARUSDT · 1h · 15 Jul–12 Oct 2026 · average range per UTC hour · Binance
  • Average daily range: 8.88%. Bitcoin's was 2.70% over the same 90 daily candles, so NEAR's range is 3.29 times BTC's.
  • Busiest hour: 15:00 UTC (18:00 MSK), averaging 2.19% per hour, followed by 14:00 (2.03%) and 16:00 (1.98%). 13:00 is fourth at 1.88%.
  • Quietest hour: 23:00 UTC (02:00 MSK), at 1.45%. The peak is 1.5 times wider.
  • By session (our UTC buckets): 13:00 to 21:00 averages 1.87% per hour, 00:00 to 08:00 averages 1.67%, 08:00 to 13:00 averages 1.62% and 21:00 to midnight averages 1.61%. The busy block is the European afternoon into the US open.

By weekday, Friday was widest (10.95% average daily range), then Thursday (9.98%); Saturday was narrowest (6.83%). Weekends averaged 7.73% against 9.35% on weekdays. In the 90 daily candles, 62 had a range above 5%, about 69%, and the median was 6.87%. The three widest days were 18 September (24.5% range, +19.6% close to open), 20 September (24.5%, +16.1%) and 8 October (24.3%, -16.3%).

We do not tie those days to news. We have no dated source linking them to a specific announcement, so any story would be a guess. What the data does support: a 5% stop sits inside NEAR's ordinary daily noise, and over these 90 days the open-to-close change was +153% (2.013 to 5.093), against +26% for BTC. The largest drop from a running peak to a daily close inside the window was 24.7%. To turn the hourly profile into a schedule, see the best time to trade crypto study and the trading sessions tool.

NEAR supply: what we can and cannot say

CoinGecko on 13 October 2026: 1.309 billion circulating, 1.309 billion total supply, a $6.53 billion market cap, the same fully diluted valuation (FDV) and rank 21. CoinGecko lists no maximum supply.

Circulating supply is almost the whole 1.31 billion total, so FDV equals market cap at 6.53 billion dollars
CoinGecko (near), 13 Oct 2026 · no max supply published

Circulating and total supply differ by 12 coins, so there is no locked block waiting to unlock in the data we have, and we found no unlock calendar in the sources we checked (CoinGecko and the NEAR docs). We did not find the network's issuance rate in a primary source on the day, so we give no inflation figure. A fully circulating supply does not mean supply is fixed.

Where NEAR trades

We read 24-hour spot volume from the public tickers of nine venues on 13 October 2026 at about 19:55 UTC.

Binance carries 279 million USD of 24-hour NEAR spot volume, far ahead of Coinbase and Gate
Public exchange tickers · approx. USD millions, 24h · 13 Oct 2026, ~19:55 UTC

Binance printed $279.3 million, about 45% of the $614.3 million across the nine; Coinbase ($65.5 million), Gate ($57.5 million) and KuCoin ($56.9 million) follow. That is about twenty times the $30.6 million we measured for Toncoin across the same kind of venue set (see the Toncoin markets page). Derivatives are larger still: the Binance NEARUSDT perpetual traded $1.22 billion in 24 hours, 4.4 times Binance spot, and the Bybit perpetual $520.3 million, 11.5 times Bybit spot, with $180.6 million of open interest on Bybit.

The tickers cover a 24-hour window in which NEAR fell about 8% (Binance: -8.3%), so the volume reflects a sell-off day, not a typical one.

NEAR vs BTC and the AI group

Over the 90 days, NEAR's daily returns correlated 0.42 with Bitcoin's, and a regression slope (beta) of 1.32 says a 1% BTC move came with a 1.32% NEAR move on average, but with plenty of scatter. The split by direction is lopsided. On the 48 days BTC closed up it averaged +1.47% and NEAR +3.01%; on the 41 days BTC closed down it averaged -1.11% and NEAR -0.89%. NEAR beat BTC on 45 of 89 days, so the outperformance came from the size of the up days, not from winning more days.

For the AI angle we compared NEAR with Bittensor, the other AI-category coin in our coverage. Their daily returns correlate 0.51, higher than NEAR's 0.42 with BTC, and they moved in the same direction on 55 of 89 days (62%). But TAO itself correlates 0.71 with BTC, so part of that link runs through Bitcoin.

NEAR's rolling 30-day correlation with BTC and with TAO rose to about 0.80 in late August and fell to about 0.30 by October
NEARUSDT, TAOUSDT and BTCUSDT daily closes · Binance · 14 Aug–12 Oct 2026

The two rolling lines almost overlap. Both climbed to 0.80 on 22 and 23 August, fell through September and bottomed at 0.30 (BTC, 1 October) and 0.31 (TAO, 7 October). They ended the window at 0.42 and 0.45. The honest reading: 90 days is too short to separate an "AI sector" factor from general market beta, and we make no claim about sector flows. What we can say is that NEAR's link to the group and to BTC rose and fell together. From the 15 July close, the NEAR/BTC ratio rose 95% to 12 October, while TAO/BTC rose 8%. Both belong to the AI category on CoinGecko, yet NEAR did not simply follow its peer. See the Bittensor market page for TAO's own structure, and the Bitcoin guide for the benchmark. Another layer 1 with its own numbers is covered in the Solana guide; one built around separate Avalanche L1 networks is in the Avalanche guide.

Reading NEAR's structure

The chart shows NEARUSDT on the 1h timeframe from 11 to 13 October 2026, with the BiasNex engine's structure events and the previous-day levels of 12 October: high 6.00 and low 5.007.

NEAR 1h: a bullish CHoCH and BOS up to 6.00, then a bearish CHoCH at 5.169 and a drop
NEARUSDT · 1h · 11–13 Oct 2026 · Binance spot, structure by BiasNex engine

At 15:00 UTC on 11 October the engine marked an external bullish change of character at 5.44. At 00:00 UTC on 12 October it marked an internal bullish break of structure at 5.90, and price printed the 6.00 high at 04:00 UTC. At 21:00 UTC on 12 October it marked an external bearish change of character at 5.169, and price made a lower low at 4.89 at 00:00 UTC on 13 October, with a lower high at 5.368 at 05:00 UTC. At 19:56 UTC on 13 October the engine's 1h label read bias bullish, context pullback, with ATR at 2.11% of price, volatility HIGH. Read it with market structure in mind: the 12 October spike to 6.00 was followed by a lower low at 4.89 and a lower high at 5.368. The live read is on the NEAR markets page; the chart is a snapshot of 13 October.

Risks

  • Range. At 8.88% a day, with 24% days in the sample, stops placed by habit from other coins get hit. Size from the stop with the position size calculator.
  • Loose BTC link. A 0.42 correlation means a BTC hedge leaves most of NEAR's movement unhedged.
  • Narrative dependence. A 153% rise in 90 days is a short sample, and the sourced AI claims are the project's own. A move that goes with a theme can reverse with it.
  • Derivatives-heavy volume. Perpetual volume is 4 to 11 times spot, so liquidation cascades can drive price in either direction.

FAQ

What is NEAR Protocol used for? NEAR is the native coin of a proof-of-stake layer 1. Per the NEAR docs it is used for network fees and staking, and the project positions the chain for smart contracts, chain signatures across other networks and AI agents.

Is NEAR an AI coin? CoinGecko lists NEAR under "Artificial Intelligence (AI)" and the project markets itself around AI agents. In our 90-day data its link to TAO (0.51) was only a little above its link to BTC (0.42), so treat the label as a category, not proof of a separate driver.

When does NEAR move the most? At 15:00 UTC (18:00 MSK), averaging 2.19% per hour, with the 13:00 to 21:00 UTC block the busiest part of the day.
