What is Bittensor? It is a network where independent subnets pay participants in its coin, TAO, for producing a "digital commodity" such as AI model output, and TAO has a fixed 21 million cap with emission that halves as supply is issued. For a trader the working facts are different: over the 90 days to 12 October 2026 TAO's average daily range was 6.44%, 2.38 times Bitcoin's 2.70%, its daily returns correlated 0.71 with BTC, and its daily volume sits on a different venue map than most large coins.

Below: what the project says it is, the supply and halving rules from its own docs, our 90-day hourly profile, where TAO trades, how it moves with BTC, a 1h structure read and the risks. Every number is computed from dated data or taken from a source we fetched on 13 October 2026.

What is Bittensor and what does TAO do

The Bittensor docs (checked 13 October 2026) describe independent subnets that each produce a digital commodity. Miners produce it, validators score the miners, subnet creators define the incentive mechanism and stakers back validators with TAO. The chain pays participants in TAO according to the value they contribute.

On the tokenomics pages, TAO has three jobs: staking to validators, paying transaction fees and supplying liquidity. Each subnet has a pool holding TAO on one side and its own token, ALPHA, on the other. A subnet's price is the TAO in the pool divided by the ALPHA in the pool, so staking into a subnet pushes its price up and unstaking pushes it down. The smallest unit is the RAO, one billionth of a TAO, and blocks arrive about every 12 seconds.

Inside a subnet, the docs split newly issued ALPHA as 41% to miners, 41% to validators and their stakers, and 18% to the subnet owner. CoinGecko (13 October 2026) files TAO under "Artificial Intelligence (AI)", "Smart Contract Platform", "Layer 1 (L1)", "DePIN" and "Bittensor Ecosystem", ranks it 36th and shows an all-time high of $757.60 on 7 March 2024.

How TAO trades: the 90-day fingerprint

We took every 1h TAOUSDT candle on Binance from 15 July to 12 October 2026 (2,160 candles) and averaged the high-to-low range for each UTC hour.

TAO's hourly range peaks at 14:00 UTC and 15:00 UTC, with a smaller bump at 02:00 UTC
TAOUSDT · 1h · 15 Jul–12 Oct 2026 · average range per UTC hour · Binance
  • Average daily range: 6.44%. Bitcoin's was 2.70% over the same 90 daily candles, so TAO's range is 2.38 times wider.
  • Busiest hour: 14:00 UTC (17:00 MSK), averaging 1.69% per hour, then 15:00 (1.61%). 13:00 and 02:00 UTC tie for third at 1.46%.
  • Quietest hours: 03:00 UTC (06:00 MSK) at 1.11% and 10:00 UTC at 1.12%. The peak is 1.5 times the quietest hour.
  • By session (our UTC buckets): 13:00 to 21:00 averages 1.41% per hour, 00:00 to 08:00 averages 1.24%, 08:00 to 13:00 averages 1.21% and 21:00 to midnight averages 1.18%.

The busy window is the second half of the European day running into the US open, with a smaller early-Asia bump at 02:00 UTC. Use the trading sessions tool to see those hours in your own time zone, and the best time to trade crypto study for the same method on majors.

By weekday over the 90 daily candles, Monday was widest at 7.02% average range, then Thursday (6.90%); Wednesday was narrowest at 5.90%. Weekend days averaged 6.24% against 6.52% on weekdays, so TAO does not go quiet on weekends (see weekend crypto trading). 51 of the 90 days (57%) had a range above 5%, and the median day was 5.71%. The three widest days were 21 September (22.4% range, closing 22.1% above the open), 6 September (16.3%, +12.5%) and 22 August (15.8%, -3.3%). We do not attach news to those days, because we have no dated source that ties them to an event.

Over the 90 days TAO went from an open of 201.3 to a close of 272.0, +35.1% against +25.8% for BTC. The deepest drop from a running peak to a daily close inside that window was 18.0%. Over the full year (13 October 2025 to 12 October 2026) the picture is rougher: the highest daily close was 497.2 on 1 November 2025, the lowest close 145.9 on 11 February 2026, a 70.7% drawdown, and the last close of 272.0 is 45% below that peak.

TAO supply, halving and emission

CoinGecko on 13 October 2026: 11.34 million TAO circulating, a 21 million total and maximum supply, a $3.16 billion market cap, a $5.84 billion fully diluted valuation (FDV) and rank 36. FDV is 1.85 times market cap, and 54% of the cap circulates.

About 11.34 million of a fixed 21 million TAO circulate, so FDV is 1.85 times market cap
CoinGecko (bittensor), 13 Oct 2026

The emission rule comes from the Bittensor tokenomics docs (checked 13 October 2026). Issuance started at 1 TAO per block, about 7,200 TAO a day. A halving happens each time half of the remaining supply has been issued, not on a fixed calendar like Bitcoin's. The thresholds the docs give are 10.5 million issued (1 TAO to 0.5 per block), 15.75 million (0.25) and 18.375 million, and so on.

Daily TAO issuance falls from about 7,200 to 3,600 after 10.5 million are issued, then to 1,800 after 15.75 million
learnbittensor.org tokenomics · checked 13 Oct 2026

The docs state the current rate as 0.5 TAO per block, about 3,600 TAO a day, so the first halving has passed. The page gives no date for it and we do not state one. Two limits of what we can say:

  • Recycling delays the next step. The docs say TAO recycled from registration fees pushes the next halving threshold further away, so timing depends on actual issuance.
  • Halving covers TAO only. ALPHA emission inside subnets is not affected.

At 3,600 TAO a day and $279 a coin, daily issuance is about $1.0 million, under 1% of the $111 million of 24-hour spot volume we measured below. Held constant, 3,600 a day is 1.31 million TAO a year, 11.6% of today's circulating count. That is our arithmetic on the docs' rate, not a forecast, since the rate steps down at 15.75 million. We found no unlock calendar or holder breakdown in the sources we checked, so we publish none.

Where TAO trades

We read 24-hour spot volume from the public tickers of eight venues on 13 October 2026 at about 20:38 UTC. Bybit's spot ticker returned no TAOUSDT pair, so it is not in the chart.

KuCoin carries 41 million USD of 24-hour TAO spot volume, ahead of Binance at 30 million and Kraken at 13 million
Public exchange tickers · approx. USD millions, 24h · 13 Oct 2026, ~20:38 UTC

KuCoin printed $41.3 million, 37% of the $111 million across the eight. Binance followed at $29.6 million (27%), then Kraken ($13.2 million, converted from TAO volume at the last price), Coinbase ($11.2 million), OKX ($6.5 million), Gate, MEXC and Bitget. Unlike NEAR, where Binance carried 45% of spot volume (see the NEAR guide), TAO's spot liquidity is split, and the largest venue differs from the usual default.

Derivatives are bigger again. The Binance TAOUSDT perpetual traded $165.4 million in 24 hours, 5.6 times Binance spot, and the Bybit perpetual turned over $41.5 million with $37.3 million of open interest.

TAO vs BTC

Over the 90 days, TAO's daily returns correlated 0.71 with Bitcoin's, and a regression slope (beta) of 1.60 says a 1% BTC move came with a 1.60% TAO move on average. The split by direction is not symmetric. On the 48 days BTC closed up it averaged +1.47% and TAO +2.80%. On the 41 days BTC closed down it averaged -1.11% and TAO -2.31%. TAO moved in the same direction as BTC on 72 of 89 days (81%) and beat it on 38 (43%). The outperformance came from a few large up days, not from winning more days. Over the same window the TAO/BTC ratio rose 8.0%.

0.71 is not a hedge: roughly half the variance of TAO's daily move (0.71 squared is 0.50) lines up with BTC. Compare the Bitcoin guide for the benchmark itself.

TAO's rolling 30-day correlation with BTC ranged from 0.49 on 18 August to 0.82 on 12 October
TAOUSDT and BTCUSDT daily closes · Binance · 14 Aug–12 Oct 2026

The rolling line ranged from 0.49 on 18 August to 0.82 on 12 October, and it ended the window at its high. After the 21 September spike it held between 0.74 and 0.82.

Reading TAO's structure

The chart shows TAOUSDT on the 1h timeframe from 11 to 13 October 2026, with the BiasNex engine's structure events and the previous-day levels of 12 October: high 302 and low 271.2.

TAO 1h: a bullish CHoCH and BOS up to 302, then a bearish CHoCH at 279.3 and a drop to 262.1
TAOUSDT · 1h · 11–13 Oct 2026 · Binance spot, structure by BiasNex engine

On the 14:00 UTC candle on 11 October the engine marked an external bullish change of character at 287.9. On the 04:00 UTC candle on 12 October it marked an external bullish break of structure at 298.1, and price printed the 302 high at 05:00 UTC. At 21:00 UTC on 12 October it marked an external bearish change of character at 279.3, and price made a lower low at 262.1 at 00:00 UTC on 13 October, then a lower high at 285.1 and a higher low at 271.3. At 20:38 UTC on 13 October the engine's 1h label read bias bullish, context pullback, with ATR at 1.46% of price, volatility HIGH. Read it against market structure: the 302 high is the level the bearish change of character invalidated, and the live read is on the Bittensor markets page.

Risks

  • Range. At 6.44% a day, with a 22% day in the sample, stops sized from other coins get hit. Size from the stop with the position size calculator.
  • Large drawdowns. The year's deepest peak-to-trough fall was 71%.
  • Emission timing. Emission depends on issuance and recycling, so the next halving date is not a calendar date and we do not state one.
  • Thin spot, large derivatives. Spot volume across eight venues is $111 million, while Binance's perpetual alone is 5.6 times its spot, so liquidation cascades can drive price in either direction.
  • High BTC link. A 0.82 rolling correlation means a BTC move is often the whole story.
