What is Polkadot? It is a layer 0 proof-of-stake network in which a central relay chain secures many connected chains, called parachains, that share its validators. DOT, its token, pays for that access, secures the network through staking and votes in governance. For a trader the working facts are different: over the 90 days to 17 October 2026 DOT's average daily range was 6.53%, 2.4 times Bitcoin's 2.76%, and over the last year the coin fell 61% while Bitcoin fell 23%.
Every number below is computed from dated data or taken from a source we fetched on 18 October 2026.
What is Polkadot and how do parachains work
The Polkadot Wiki describes a parachain as an application-specific data structure that the relay chain's validators can verify. Most are blockchains. Each has its own state and logic, and parachains talk to each other through XCM messages. The relay chain links every parachain's state into one shared state and gives all of them the same security from launch, so a new chain does not have to recruit its own validators (Polkadot Wiki, checked 18 October 2026).
The way a chain gets that access has changed. The wiki says parachain slot auctions and crowdloans have been deprecated, and leases were converted to coretime. Non-system chains now buy bulk or on-demand coretime with DOT, and the DOT spent on coretime is burned. A chain without coretime drops to parathread status: it keeps its ParaID but loses its core.
CoinGecko (18 October 2026) files DOT under "Smart Contract Platform", "Layer 0 (L0)" and "Proof of Stake (PoS)", ranks it 52nd by market cap and lists an all-time high of $54.98 on 4 November 2021. Its price that day was $1.074, 98% below that high.
How DOT trades: the 90-day fingerprint
We took every 1h DOTUSDT candle on Binance from 19 July to 17 October 2026 and averaged the high-to-low range for each UTC hour.

- Average daily range: 6.53%. Bitcoin's was 2.76% over the same 90 daily candles. The median DOT day was 5.63%, 54 of 90 days (60%) ranged above 5% and 11 days (12%) ranged above 10%.
- Busiest hour: 14:00 UTC (17:00 MSK), averaging 1.69% per hour, then 15:00 (1.55%). There is a second, smaller bump at 01:00 (1.42%) and 02:00 UTC (1.38%), early in the Asia session.
- Quietest hours: 11:00, 19:00 and 07:00 UTC at 1.08%, 1.09% and 1.10% (14:00, 22:00 and 10:00 MSK). The peak is 1.6 times the quietest hour.
- By session (our UTC buckets): 13:00 to 21:00 averages 1.34% per hour, against 1.24% for 00:00 to 08:00, 1.20% for 08:00 to 13:00 and 1.20% for 21:00 to midnight.
The busy window is the European afternoon running into the US open. The trading sessions tool shows those hours in your time zone; the best time to trade crypto study uses the same method on majors.
By UTC weekday, Friday was widest at 7.70% average range, then Tuesday (7.42%) and Wednesday (7.05%). Sunday was narrowest at 4.86%. Weekend days averaged 5.30% against 7.00% on weekdays, so DOT is calmer at the weekend but not quiet (see weekend crypto trading). The three widest days were 8 September (22.3% range, closing 17.3% above the open), 7 September (15.6%, +8.6%) and 9 October (14.3%, +13.4%). We attach no news to them: we have no dated source tying them to an event.
DOT's long downtrend in numbers
The last year is the opposite of a smooth trend with pullbacks. DOT opened the window (18 October 2025) at 2.892 and the last daily close, on 17 October 2026, was 1.116: down 61.4%, while BTC fell 23.4% over the same days. The DOT/BTC ratio halved, down about 50%. Closes every three months show the slope: 2.932, 2.119, 1.329, 0.847 (18 October 2025, 16 January, 16 April, 15 July 2026), then 1.116 on 17 October.
- Highest close in the window: 3.266 on 10 November 2025. The last close sits 65.8% below it, 341 days later.
- Lowest close: 0.752 on 18 August 2026, a 77.0% drop from that peak, the deepest we measured on daily closes.
- Since the low: the last close is 48.4% above it, and over the last 90 days DOT gained 36.1% (from an open of 0.820) against 25.9% for BTC.
So the structure has two parts: a year-long slide, and a rebound from the August low that has recovered about 14% of the fall from the November high close.
DOT supply, issuance and unlocks
CoinGecko on 18 October 2026: 1.708 billion DOT circulating, a 2.1 billion maximum supply, a $1.83 billion market cap. 81% of the cap circulates, so about 392 million DOT remain below it. CoinGecko's fully diluted valuation ($1.835 billion) is almost identical to the market cap because it uses total supply, not the cap.

The issuance rules come from the Polkadot Wiki's DOT page (checked 18 October 2026). It states a maximum supply capped at 2.1 billion DOT and describes the stepped schedule introduced by Referendum 1710, implemented in January 2026: inflation steps down every two years, with the first step on 14 March 2026. New DOT rewards validators and nominators through staking, and part of it goes to the Treasury, which funds projects through OpenGov. The wiki also says its own supply figure is approximately 1.6 billion DOT, which is lower than CoinGecko's 1.708 billion, so we use CoinGecko's dated number and do not forecast future issuance. We found no dated unlock calendar for DOT in the sources we checked, so we publish none.
Where DOT trades
We read 24-hour spot volume from the public tickers of nine venues on 18 October 2026 at about 18:28 UTC. Kraken and Coinbase report volume in DOT, which we converted at Kraken's 24h average price and Coinbase's last price, so those two are approximate.

KuCoin printed $12.1 million, 43% of the $28.4 million across the nine. Binance followed at $6.8 million (24%), then OKX ($2.3 million), MEXC, Bybit, Coinbase, Gate, Kraken and Bitget. That is thin for a top-100 coin: all nine venues together turned over about 1.5% of DOT's market cap in a day. NEAR is another coin where the venue mix is a story of its own.
Derivatives dwarf spot. The Binance DOTUSDT perpetual traded $45.1 million in 24 hours, 6.7 times Binance spot, and the Bybit perpetual turned over $13.5 million with $23.7 million of open interest.
DOT vs BTC
Over the 90 days, DOT's daily returns correlated 0.47 with Bitcoin's, and a regression slope (beta) of 1.03 says a 1% BTC move came with about a 1.03% DOT move. Over the full year the numbers were 0.60 and 1.16. The split by direction is uneven. On the 47 days BTC closed up it averaged +1.50% and DOT +1.89%. On the 42 days BTC closed down it averaged -1.11% and DOT -1.19%. DOT moved in the same direction as BTC on 62 of 89 days (70%) and beat it on 39 (44%).
A 0.47 correlation is loose: about a fifth of the variance of DOT's daily move (0.47 squared is 0.22) lines up with BTC. The rolling line shows how much that changed. Compare the Bitcoin guide for the benchmark itself.

The 30-day correlation held between 0.72 and 0.80 from 20 August to 5 September, dropped to 0.36 on 8 September and reached a low of 0.20 on 20 September. It jumped back to 0.55 on 8 October and ended the window at 0.55.
Reading DOT's structure
The chart shows DOTUSDT on the 1h timeframe from 15 to 18 October 2026, with the BiasNex engine's structure events and the previous-day levels (17 October): high 1.208 and low 1.092.

At 01:00 UTC on 16 October the engine marked an external bullish change of character at 1.158. At 15:00 UTC on 17 October it marked an internal bearish CHoCH at 1.135, and at 13:00 UTC on 18 October an internal bearish break of structure at 1.09, below the previous-day low of 1.092. At about 18:28 UTC the engine's 1h label read bias bearish, context trend, with ATR at 1.11% of price, volatility HIGH, and DOT traded at 1.074 on Binance. Read it against market structure: price was rejected at the 1.208 high of 17 October, then broke the 1.092 low. DOT does not have a live page under our markets section yet.
Risks
- Range. At 6.53% a day, with a 22.3% day in the sample, stops sized from major coins get hit. Size from the stop with the position size calculator.
- Large drawdowns. The year's deepest fall was 77%, and the coin is still 66% below its November 2025 high close.
- Thin spot liquidity. About $28 million traded across nine venues in 24 hours.
- Derivatives dominate. Binance's perpetual alone is 6.7 times its spot volume, so liquidation cascades can drive price in either direction.
- Changing issuance. The wiki's own supply figure differs from CoinGecko's, and the stepped schedule is recent, so check both before modelling supply.

FAQ
What is Polkadot used for? It runs a relay chain that secures connected chains called parachains. DOT pays for coretime, is staked to secure the network and votes in governance, according to the Polkadot Wiki.
How many DOT will there ever be? The wiki states a maximum supply capped at 2.1 billion DOT. CoinGecko lists 1.708 billion as circulating on 18 October 2026, about 81% of the cap.
What happened to parachain auctions? The wiki says slot auctions and crowdloans have been deprecated. Chains now buy coretime with DOT, and the DOT used is burned.
Is DOT a good hedge against Bitcoin? Not on our data. The 90-day correlation was 0.47 and the 30-day reading 0.55, and DOT fell 61% over a year in which BTC fell 23%, so it added risk rather than cover.
